Is The Administration Trying To ‘Dry Up’ Ammo Supply? This Senator Thinks So

Let me start by saying I’m not, nor have I ever been, a conspiracist. Talk of one-world governments, new world orders, Trilateral Commissions and Bilderberg Groups has gone on for decades – all for naught.

So when stories first started to appear about the Department of Homeland Security buying up billions of rounds of ammunition, I was skeptical. Skeptical at first as to whether it was actually happening, and once it became clear that it was, even more skeptical as to the reason(s) why.

Far-right blogs immediately seized on the story as “proof” that Obama’s DHS was quietly building an executive branch “army” if you will, which would ostensibly be used to put down a civilian “uprising.” As additional stories sprang up about DHS buying and retrofitting “thousands” of armored vehicles for domestic use, the “proof” became even more conclusive in the minds of the conspiracists.

In addition, a somewhat less-ominous theory has emerged: the Administration is attempting to “dry up” the ammunition supply – in an effort to keep it out of the hands of private gun owners. Is it true? At least one senator says it is. From The Daily Caller:

On Aaron Klein’s weekend show on New York City’s WABC radio, Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe accused the Obama Administration of buying up ammunition at an unprecedented level to bypass the Second Amendment so gun-owners “can’t even buy ammunition because the government is purchasing so much.”

“Let’s make sure that your audience out there is aware, Aaron, that our president, Obama, has been doing everything he could to stop the private ownership of guns in America. You know that; everyone knows that. And yet he’s been voted down in a big way by a large majority.

And so my feeling is that he’s doing this to buy up [ammunition] so that we can’t buy: Honest, law-abiding citizens here in the United States, like my son, can’t even buy ammunition because government is purchasing so much.”

Inhofe explained to Klein he is working to introduce the Ammunition Management for More Obtainability (AMMO) bill that will limit “non-defense, armed federal agencies to pre-Obama levels of ammunition.” Inhofe was skeptical of the theory that the ammo buy-up was an effort by DHS to seize power from the states, as some have suggested, but did say it was unprecedented and shouldn’t be allowed.

“This has never happened in this country before,” he added. “We’ve never had government trying to take that much control at the expense of the law-abiding citizens. And we’re not going to let it happen. Continue reading…

So the conjecture and debate continues. Why does DHS continue to purchase unprecedented amounts of ammunition? Are the conspiracists right? Is Senator Inhofe right? What do you think?
