Chris Cabrera is a spokesperson for the National Border Patrol Council, a union representing United States Border Patrol Agents. He has some sobering news for Americans who are concerned about the risk Ebola poses to them. In an interview for KGBT television in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Cabrera tells the reporter just how high the threat level really is.
He says, “Not too long ago we did catch some people I believe from Liberia.” The reporter, Nadia Galindo, cites statistics just released which show that there have many quite a few individuals intercepted from the three primary Ebola risk nations during the fiscal year 2013, which ended October 1st.
Government figures indicate that 112 individuals were interdicted illegally crossing into the United States from Guinea, 231 from Liberia, and another 145 from Sierra Leone, the three Ebola hot spots. The period of these apprehensions was one in which we had a larger Border Patrol presence on the actual border than we do now.
Recent open-border policy decisions by DHS and the executive branch have resulted in fewer agents protecting us at a time when the threat has become much greater, manifesting itself in a variety of forms, one of which is the potential spread of disease.
Cabrera is concerned about the risk of his agents becoming infected through contact with sick illegals and recommends true border enforcement as an important weapon in the battle to protect against diseases, including Ebola being brought into the country.
He notes how some agents came down with scabies a few months ago as a result of contact with illegals and how the potential consequences of contracting Ebola are often deadly.
Agent Cabrera advises “We need to be more proactive in preventing it from coming in as opposed to trying to contain it once it’s already here.”
